HCII 2027: Call for participation

HCI International 2027, the 29th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, jointly with the affiliated Conferences, under the auspices of 22 distinguished international boards, to be held under one management and one registration, will take place at the Estrel Hotel and Congress Center, Berlin, Germany, between 25 and 30 July 2027. HCII 2027 will run as an on-site Conference with the additional option for on-line participation.

You are invited to participate and contribute through papers, posters, student designs, workshops or courses to this major international forum for the dissemination and exchange of up-to-date scientific information on theoretical and applied areas of HCI.

You may wish to download the Call for Participation in PDF format.

The 2027 Conference Management System (CMS) is open for proposal submission.

The Conference Proceedings will be published by Springer in a multi-volume set. Papers will appear in the LNCS and LNAI series, while poster extended abstracts will be published in the CCIS series. All volumes will be available on-line through the SpringerLink Digital Library, readily accessible by subscribing libraries, and indexed by a number of services, including: CPCI, part of Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science; Scopus; EI Engineering Index; ACM Digital Library; Google Scholar; DBLP, etc.

Awards will be presented during the Opening Plenary Session to the authors of the best paper of each of the Thematic Areas / Affiliated Conferences and the best poster of HCII 2027.

The Student Design Competition gives College and University students of all grades an opportunity to present their design idea, by submitting an abstract and a video clip (up to 5-minutes). Three awards will be presented: GOLD ($1000), SILVER ($500) and BRONZE ($250).

Inspired by the World Café method, and following the success of its predecessors, the HCII 2027 Design Café will provide an opportunity for discussion and rethinking of important topics of global interest.

HCII 2027: Important deadlines

Mark in your calendar the following important deadlines:

9 October 2026: paper proposals (submitted through the regular process)
9 October 2026: course proposals
15 January 2027: poster proposals
12 March 2027: student designs

The Conference has a long-established tradition of inviting distinguished scientists and professionals in the broader HCI field to organize parallel sessions. Prospective authors should submit their proposal upon invitation from a session organizer.

HCII 2027: New Affiliated Conference "Human-Robot Interaction and Collaboration"

The 1st International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction and Collaboration (HRIC), debuting as an Affiliated Conference under the HCI International Conference umbrella, starting from HCII 2027 in Berlin, provides an interdisciplinary forum exploring how embodied intelligent systems transition from isolated automation tools into active partners across workplaces, healthcare, and public spaces.

Program Chairs: Renran Tian (North Carolina State University, USA) and Vincent G. Duffy (Purdue University, USA / American University of Sharjah, UAE)

Rapid advances in AI, foundation models, and autonomy, are expanding how humans communicate, share control, and build trust with robots to ensure safe, effective, and inclusive collaboration. The Human-Robot Interaction and Collaboration Conference (HRIC) bridges psychology, human factors, artificial intelligence, control engineering, and design to address cognitive workload, adaptive interfaces, and physical co-manipulation. Technical contributions regarding robotics, sensing, or teleoperation are explicitly welcome whenever human interaction remains central to the work, expanding our scope into education, transportation, and wearable systems. We welcome theoretical, empirical, design-oriented, and applied research across industrial cobots, social humanoids, and service platforms. Join us in bringing together academics, industry professionals, and designers to shape the future of human-centered robotic partnerships.

HCII 2027: New co-chair for the AC 2027 Conference

Joseph Cohn (Lyntris, USA) will be co-chairing the 21st International Conference on Augmenting Cognition in the AI-Accelerated Era (AC 2027), along with Dylan Schmorrow (Lyntris, USA) and Cali Fidopistis (Katmai Technical Services, USA).

HCII 2027: Abigail Sellen will be the recipient of the 2027 HCI Medal for Societal Impact and the Keynote Speaker

The 'HCI MEDAL FOR SOCIETAL IMPACT' was established in 2022 to be awarded to distinguished HCI academics, researchers, or professionals in recognition of the impact of their work in the field of HCI to society. The idea of the medal is to inspire younger generations towards accomplishments that leave a major footprint on society and foster well-being and eudaimonia. The nomination originates from an international committee and the Medal is conferred at a ceremony during the Conference Opening Plenary Session.

Abigail Sellen will be the recipient of the 'HCI MEDAL FOR SOCIETAL IMPACT' for 2027 and keynote speaker.
Abigail is Vice President at Microsoft Research Cambridge in the UK and was Lab Director for 3 years. Throughout her career she has aspired to put human values at the centre of technology design, working within the context of industrial research where much of the change happens. Her most recent focus is using HCI research to combat the spread of misinformation and disinformation. As generative AI accelerates the creation of highly realistic synthetic content, the ability to understand where information comes from—and how it has been altered—has never been more important. The work of her team focuses on a critical, underexplored challenge: using human-centred research and design to make provenance information more accessible, meaningful, and actionable in real-world settings.

More broadly, Abigail is an expert in human-centric computing, publishing books and papers on many topics including: human-centric AI, healthcare, computer input, help systems, reading, paper use in offices, videoconferencing design, search, human error, and computer support for human memory. This includes the book “The Myth of the Paperless Office” (with co-author Richard Harper), which won an IEEE award for distinguished literary contribution to engineering. She is an inventor with over 70 patents pending or granted.

Abigail is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society for the Arts, and the ACM. She is also an International Member of the US National Academy of Engineering and the ACM SigCHI Academy.

HCII 2027: About Berlin

Berlin is the capital and largest city of Germany with 3.7 million inhabitants and has the highest population within its city limits, of any city in the European Union (EU). Berlin is also the capital of culture, attracting artists, creative minds, culture lovers, and theatre fans from all over Germany and around the world. The diverse cultural offerings and the colourful hustle and bustle of the city create a very special atmosphere. Opera performances, art exhibitions, theatre productions, concerts, and festivals are all everyday occurrences here. With around 200 museums, collections, and memorial sites, 400 galleries, three opera houses, eight major symphony orchestras, more than 90 cinemas, about 150 theatres and stages, as well as many other cultural institutions, the German capital offers an almost inexhaustible selection of options.

Berlin is the authentic place where world history was made and is rich in buildings and sights to prove it, like the Reichstag and the nearby Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of reunification. The magnificent square, Pariser Platz, in front of the Brandenburg Gate, where world-famous buildings such as the historic Hotel Adlon and the Academy of Arts are located. The 368 metres tall Berlin TV Tower, the tallest building in Berlin, built in the 1960s, offers a unique 360° panoramic view of the city, situated right on Alexanderplatz, the centre of what was once East Berlin. Berlin’s world-famous Museum Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with five major museums showcasing more than 6,000 years of art and cultural history: the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie, the Bode Museum and the Pergamon Museum, which is set to reopen in 2027. The Berlin Wall Memorial, situated on Bernauer Strasse, is a large site featuring an outdoor exhibition, a documentation centre, the Memorial to the Victims of the Division, and the Chapel of Reconciliation. There, an original section of the Wall, complete with a watchtower, shows you what the former border defences looked like, and the famous East Side Gallery, with over 1,300 metres, is the longest surviving section of the Wall, painted by 118 artists from 21 countries, after its fall.

World Usability Initiative 2026 Design Challenge

The theme of the World Usability Initiative (WUI) Design Challenge for 2026 was ‘Designing a Sustainable Future with Ethical AI’. Winners will be announced on World Usability Day, 12 November 2026. Three awards sponsored by HCII 2027 will be conferred during the Opening Plenary Session: GOLD ($1250), SILVER ($1000) and BRONZE ($750). The three award winners will be cordially invited, with complimentary registration, to present their work in a special hybrid session of the Conference.
