Book Review
Biometrics: a very short introduction - by Michael Fairhurst
November 2018, Oxford University Press

This Introduction to Biometrics, published in the Oxford University Press series ‘Very Short Introductions’, provides an excellent pathway to understand the main scientific, technical and societal issues involved in a field, which is acquiring nowadays progressive attention at an academic, research and industrial level, as the need for more secure and at the same time more usable information technologies increases.

Moving from the basic question of how to verify personal identity, the book starts with the fundamentals: a definition of biometrics and an overview of its required features, as well as common biometric modalities such as face features, fingerprints, iris patterns, handwritten signature, etc. The introduction also mentions frequent applications of biometrics and briefly outlines the role of contributing disciplines such as image processing and pattern recognition. The second chapter introduces the concept of a biometric system, illustrates its abstract architecture and components, and discusses the success and failure measures for such a system along with frequent error causes. The third chapter analyzes in more detail each modality, focusing on advantages and disadvantages, application requirements, and recognition techniques, thus providing a practical roadmap to modality selection in biometric systems, depending on the context of use and the required security levels. The remaining chapters look into the future of biometrics by discussing how biometric processing can be enhanced through the combination of multiple recognition techniques and/or modalities, and how biometrics can be exploited beyond identity verification to predict human characteristics such as age and gender. Finally, the book offers an overview of open research issues in the field of biometrics, including the study of new, fascinating modalities, such as heart rhythm and brainwaves, as well as the usability and acceptability of biometric technologies by the public at large.

It is uncommon to find introductory books which are written for non-specialists and succeed in concisely presenting an entire complex field of investigation in a readable and accessible form, without sacrificing scientific rigor, and at the same time also offering a research and an application perspective. This is one such book.
